Christmas Comes to your Kitchen

Let’s face it, if we had the space, we’d probably all want a Christmas tree in our kitchen, am I right? Nothing beats the gentle texture of evergreen and a soft glow of twinkle lights. During this time of year, we spend more time cooking and cleaning and gathering in here so it makes sense to want to make our kitchens really festive!

My number one tip for a cozy Christmas kitchen is an over-the-sink garland. There is no wrong way to do it, but I wanted to share a few of my TOP TIPS for achieving this cozy look. Once you get your garland up, you may even want to do the dishes! And adding a few extra Christmas touches go a ling way!

GARLAND TIP ONE:

Use nails to hang your garland. <GASP> I know. It seems unnatural to use a nail to hang seasonal decor, but hear me out. Using a nail to secure the garland to the wall will ensure that it wont fall. It’s sad when you carefully tuck all of those lovely picks and branches into the garland (more on that later), only to have it all fall apart when your command hook fails overnight. Additionally, when you strategically place your nail, you can leave it there year-round and no one will be the wiser.

GARLAND TIP TWO:

Hide your cord. If you are using plug in twinkle lights, get sneaky and hide your cord. I love to layer cake plates, or cutting boards to mask unsightly cords. Nothing robs the magic light seeing a dark green cord.

GARLAND TIP THREE:

If you garland is faux (like my garland), I highly recommend layering in some real branches. I love eucalyptus and cypress bunches that you can find at Trader Joes or even Home Depot added to my garland. Pick something that dries nicely, as they will dry out. Silver Dollar Eucalyptus looks pretty for a long time, even after its dry. I found the drive pomegranates at Trader Joes.

Super cozy in our kitchen now! Christmas last year we went to my parents, right when we walked in I spotted the garland, just like this over their sink. Then went to my sisters and she had done the same. It felt SO inviting. I know everyone who walked into their homes felt it too. Two easy ways to achieve the look on your home- #1- Follow my tips and hang some garland with lights over a window or door. #2- Add under cabinet lights, something you don’t need to hire anyone to install. Easy ways to make your kitchen look extra inviting this season! (exact under cabinet lights HERE).

Alisha Slattery used the same preserved boxwood garland I used last year above her sink. Looks like she used two of them and I love the way the split directions up top.

Here is another look from Ashlee’s kitchen–she said that she is still playing with it. The little dried oranges give such a vintage feel– but here is proof that there are lots of ways to get this look “right!’
